Powder vs fiber vs micropigmentation brows

Alaa Al Masri — Amman, Jordan Updated 5 min read

Three techniques that do not rely on the hand blade, all lasting a year or more, yet each gives a different result. Here is what sets powder, micropigmentation and fiber apart, and who each one is for.

Powder brows before and after — comparing powder, micropigmentation and the fiber technique at Alaa Al Masri's studio, Abdoun, Amman

When you hear that microblading doesn't suit your oily skin, or a brow that already has old work on it, three names are left on the table: powder brows, micropigmentation and the fiber technique. None of the three relies on the hand blade, and all three last a year or more, which is why they get mixed up so often. But each gives a different result, and this article puts them side by side so you know the difference before you book.

Powder vs fiber vs micropigmentation, in short

If you want the answer in one line: powder for brows with no hair and very oily skin, micropigmentation for hair strokes more natural than microblading that also work over old work, and fiber, the newest and most natural of all. The detail is in this table:

Powder brows: packed dots for very oily skin and hairless brows

Powder brows don't draw hair strokes at all. It is fine dots packed closely together to fill the brow. Because it doesn't rely on a fine line that can spread, it is the first choice for very oily skin.

It suits you if your skin is very oily, or if there is no hair in your brows for strokes to be built on — the dots fill the whole area.

Micropigmentation: hair strokes more natural than microblading, and it works over old work

Micropigmentation is newer than microblading: fine hair strokes drawn one by one with a fine device, looking more natural than microblading strokes. It suits every skin type, especially oily and combination skin, which microblading does not suit, and its advantage no other technique shares is that it can be used to correct over previous work without removal, as long as the old colour is light.

It suits you if your brows carry an old, faded tattoo, or if your skin is oily or combination and you want the hair-stroke look for one to two years. The full micropigmentation guide →

Fiber technique: the newest brow technique, and the most natural

The fiber technique is the newest brow technique. It draws fine hair strokes one by one, each following the natural growth direction at its spot: more upright at the front, more angled towards the tail. Because it doesn't cut the skin, each stroke keeps its edge even on oily skin. It is the closest to natural and the longest-lasting — one to three years — and it suits every skin type.

I learned it in Vietnam, and I don't know of anyone else practising it in the Middle East. It suits you if you want the closest thing to a natural brow and the longest hold, whatever your skin type. Everything about the fiber technique →

Which technique suits you? Three questions decide it

  • Is there previous work on your brows? If it's light, micropigmentation is built over it. If it's dark or has turned blue or red, we start with removal or lightening first, then decide.
  • Is your skin very oily, or are your brows hairless? Powder.
  • Do you want the hair-stroke look? The fiber technique is the closest to natural and the longest-lasting. Micropigmentation is hair strokes too, at a lower price and lasting one to two years.
Price doesn't choose the technique The gap between JOD 150 and 250 isn't "cheap" versus "premium" quality — it's a difference in what is placed under the skin and how long it lasts. Your skin type and any previous work are what decide. And if the technique you want doesn't suit you, I'll tell you plainly and explain the alternative, even when it costs less.

What about microblading and nano blading?

Microblading and nano blading (JOD 180) give beautiful hair strokes, but they don't suit oily or combination skin, or any brow with previous work, and they last 3–9 months. That is why they aren't part of this comparison. All six techniques are compared in the brow technique guide.

In short

Powder for very oily skin and for brows with no hair; micropigmentation for natural hair strokes on oily and combination skin, or to correct over light old work; fiber for the closest thing to your natural brow and the longest hold.
