Who is Alaa Al Masri?

The name first

I am Alaa Al Masri, also written Ala’a Al Masri, علاء المصري in Arabic, and @3la2almasri on social media. “Al Masri” is a Jordanian family name, not a nationality — I mention it because people ask, and because anyone searching for me sometimes finds other people carrying the same name.

I work at the Brow Studio in Abdoun, Amman, and take one appointment at a time.

I started as a draughtsman

Before beauty work I was a portrait artist. Drawing faces in pencil: measuring the distance between the eyes, following the line of a brow, watching a whole expression change when one brow tail rises by a millimetre.

I hold a certificate and a medal from the Greater Amman Municipality for drawing at the Arab Artists Exhibition.

That background is not a footnote in my biography — it is the daily tool. Mapping the brow before the first stroke is half the result, and no machine or pigment rescues someone who cannot measure a face.

From drawing to brows — 2013

I began brow work in 2013 — thirteen years to date. The work has been the same in essence ever since: a measurement taken on a face, then a line that follows the measurement.

Who sits in this chair

Among the people who sit in it are artists, broadcasters, content creators and well-known faces in Jordan and beyond. I name no one. Anyone who sits here does so knowing that what happens in the studio stays in it.

But what I learned from them is for you: a face that is photographed often cannot carry a brow that “reads as drawn” — the camera shows what the mirror does not. That is why I work stroke by stroke and map before the needle — for every client, not for the well-known ones alone.

Training: Ukraine, Serbia and Vietnam

I completed my training in Ukraine, Serbia and Vietnam with permanent makeup specialists — in person, at the source of these techniques rather than from internet clips — and I still travel to Vietnam every year for advanced training, because the techniques move quickly. That is where I learned the fiber technique — fine strokes drawn one by one, each following the direction the hair grows in that spot — and I know of no one else practising it in the Middle East.

Today I teach all eight techniques, and trainees come to me from Jordan and from Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain and Oman.

How I work

• Two questions before anything else: what is your skin type, and does your brow carry previous work? These two remove half the options before we start.
• Mapping measured against your own features, not a shape from a photograph.
• Nothing is executed until you approve the shape in the mirror.
• Sterile tools opened in front of you, and certified pigments.
• And I say no when no is the answer: if the technique you came for does not suit your skin, I say so plainly and explain the alternative — even when the alternative costs less.

The studio

It is in Abdoun, and I take one appointment at a time. No queue, no two chairs running at once — because drawing on a face needs unbroken attention, and because what happens in a session belongs to the person it happened to.
